Botulinum Toxin
Botulinum Toxin
Wrinkles, both deep and superficial, are caused by excessive contraction of the underlying facial muscles. In some cases, imbalanced muscle activity can lead to changes in facial appearance, such as raised eyebrows, drooping eyelids, or sagging mouth corners.
Today, Botulinum Toxin is commonly used to reduce the overactivity of muscles, helping to smooth wrinkles and refine facial contours. However, if too much Botulinum Toxin is used, it can cause muscle paralysis, potentially leading to facial asymmetry.
Botulinum Toxin is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and is a protein toxin. It works by blocking the release of neurotransmitters, preventing nerves from signaling muscles to contract. As a result, the muscle activity is reduced after the injection. However, over time, the body naturally recovers, and the muscles regain their function, typically after about 6 months. This is why repeat treatments with Botulinum Toxin are necessary.
Botulinum Toxin injections are generally not dangerous, as the concentration and dosage used are very small. Unwanted side effects can occur if the injection is administered incorrectly or if too much toxin is injected into a muscle group, potentially causing facial asymmetry. However, these effects are temporary and typically resolve within 6 months.
